Paint, Wallcoverings and Woodcare Market Report - UK 2012-2016 Analysis (Mar 2012)
Following a period of decline in 2008 and 2009, market values have risen from 2010 onwards with 2011 displaying growth of as much as 5%. A key factor in the stronger market performance since 2010 is the rise in costs, in particular relating to raw materials, energy and production costs in general, while imports have also become more expensive, leading to higher product prices and boosted market values.
The overall market in 2011 has seen a relatively strong increase in value terms, although the performance of individual product sectors has varied considerably. Paint, wallcoverings and woodcare all constitute mature sectors and as such the market is highly susceptible to changes in the economic climate and fluctuations in the weather as well as fashion trends within interior design.
Upholstered Furniture and Beds Market Report - UK 2012-2016 Analysis (Mar 2012)
AMA Research are pleased to announce the publication of the 11th edition of the report entitled Upholstered Furniture and Beds Market Report UK 2012-2016 Analysis. The report incorporates original research and provides a comprehensive review of the market, with information collated from a wide range of trade and other sources and not simply a collection of Government statistics. Data and comment is therefore specific and relevant to the markets involved.
Lighting Market Report - UK 2012-2016 Analysis (Apr 2012)
This eleventh edition of the UK Lighting Market report reviews the major sectors of the market and identifies key suppliers and influences. The report assesses recent developments within the market and analyses the market and distribution channels with indications of future trends and opportunities. Information has been collated from a wide range of sources including company literature and accounts, trade magazines, government and other published data and interviews with a wide range of companies involved in the lighting market.
Following a decline in the market in 2009 as the economy struggled and construction output fell, the UK lighting market experienced a brief recovery in 2010 driven by growth in business and consumer confidence and supported by the public sector. However, the market returned to negative performance in 2011 as government cuts started to impact on public sector construction.
The lamp market experienced growth in 2011 contrary to performance of the overall market, as the European ban on incandescent bulbs resulted in a move towards more expensive alternatives, impacting on product mix and market value, particularly in the domestic market.
The market is being supported by product development in all sectors, with LEDs a particular focus. In the last 12-24 months, development in this area has seen more LED products entering the mainstream market. Non-domestic users have been quicker on the uptake of LEDs as specifiers and builders become increasingly innovative in the use of light to cut long term costs and carbon emissions.
Domestic Window Coverings Market Report - UK 2012-2016 Analysis (Apr 2012)
This report is the 10th edition of the Domestic Window Coverings Market, and reviews the performance of the sector in recent years. The market has undergone significant change over the past 5 years, particularly since the start of 2008, when the effects of the credit crunch and subsequent economic downturn began to impact first on the domestic sector, in terms of housebuilding activity, consumer spending and DIY/refurbishment activity and more recently on contract/commercial projects.
The volume decline took place in a market where prices were already under severe pressure as a result of increasing competition and cheaper foreign imports (particularly from Chinese producers), and this has impacted on suppliers, who have been struggling to cope with shrinking margins and declining sales.
Internet Garden Market Report - UK 2012-2016 Analysis (Apr 2012)
This 2nd edition of the Internet Garden Market reviews the domestic Internet garden market in the UK. Key product sectors, market sizes, trends and factors influencing the market are assessed and the report provides an insight into the growing presence of the Internet as a competing channel in the distribution of garden products.
The garden products market, including sales via the Internet distribution channel, is highly dependent on the weather as well as economic conditions, although the gardening industry tends to cope well with economic downturns and does not suffer as badly as some other sectors. The UK total Internet garden products market, which includes e-tailers as well as the non-specialists operating a transactional website offering garden products, is a rapidly growing market and currently worth over £200m.

Household Textiles Market Report - UK 2012-2016 Analysis (Aug 2012)
This report reviews the Household Textiles market in the UK and assesses recent developments within the overall market and individual sub-sectors. Aspects examined include market development, recent trends, sectoral analysis, and key factors influencing future development of the overall market and for each sub-sector.
The maturity of the market and the non-essential nature of purchases has meant that the market has faced increasing pressure over the last 2-3 years. Rising raw materials prices and increased production costs in import source countries such as China has meant that value growth has been affected by price inflation whilst volume sales remain relatively subdued. The market remains polarized with heavy price discounting and a large number of sales events being used to attract customers in times when consumer spending on non-essentials remains constrained.
This report reviews the key developments within the Household Textiles market over the last two years, providing an overall analysis of the current market with indications of potential future trends and opportunities for growth.

The UK market for bathroom and kitchen pods has experienced a decline following the downturn in the commercial and domestic construction sector. Education, hotels and healthcare remain key end use sectors.

Plastics Recycling Market Report - UK 2011-2015 (Sep 2011)
This report covers the plastics recycling market in the UK, plastic waste from the domestic, commercial and industrial waste streams but excludes industrial process waste, which is principally reprocessed by plastics manufacturers in house and is therefore almost impossible to assess.
The report analyses the factors influencing market growth and change, covering in detail recent legislation and directives likely to affect the market in the near future.
There are some 50 groups of plastics, with hundreds of different varieties, all of which are potentially recyclable. However, problems with recycling mixed materials means that the recycling market is dominated by six of the most common polymer types, many of which are used in packaging. While it is unlikely that there will be a dramatic upturn in the variety of plastics recycled, with investment in recycling plant only financially viable for the more commonly occurring products, legislative influences are likely to produce significant changes in the product mix over the next few years.
The market structure is complex, with recycling of post-use plastic involving collection, sorting, reprocessing and incorporation of recycled polymer into new products. Some companies focus on only one area of activity, while other, often larger, players are active in several. The benefits of reusing industrial process waste in-house, combined with the requirement for producers in some sectors to meet recycling targets, have encouraged some plastics manufacturers to run a recycling operation, commonly incorporating recycled plastic into a proportion of their own products.
The domestic sector represents the largest source of post-use plastic waste. While the number of local authorities operating collection schemes has increased in recent years, kerbside collection is the method most likely to encourage participation by the general public. Meanwhile, recovery of plastic from the commercial and industrial sectors is likely to be encouraged by increasingly comprehensive legislation.
Use of recycled polymer by manufacturers has traditionally depended upon it offering a significant price advantage over virgin polymer, with usage historically constrained by the low prices of virgin material. In addition, the market for recycled polymer has been limited by the perception amongst some end-use sectors (e.g.: the construction industry) that it is of inferior quality.

Both primary and secondary research has been undertaken for the collection of information within this report. Secondary data sources include government statistics, company accounts, trade magazines etc. Primary research includes interviews to establish the industrys views both on the market situation and likely future developments. In addition, AMA Researchs background knowledge of the garden products industry was used to develop a more detailed review of the key distribution channels relevant to the UK Garden Leisure industry.
Kitchen and Bathroom Distributors Market Report - UK 2011-2015 (Aug 2011)
This report reviews the market for kitchen and bathroom distributors, a key distribution channel for bathroom and kitchen products. The market has experienced a downturn over the last two years; however there are signs of more stability or possibly a tentative recovery in 2011. In the long term, however, a shortage of housing and trends for higher value products should see the market continue to grow.
The focus of this report is on the distributors themselves. We have defined what, in our view, constitutes a kitchen and bathroom distributor in order to be specific on market size and trends. Also included is a review of the key product areas sold by distributors though it should be emphasised that in a report of this nature, they cannot be covered in detail.
Statistics on this market are limited and we have used our background knowledge and experience to identify key areas of importance and to analyse and interpret the various trends. Product information is partly taken from AMA Researchs detailed product reports.
This information has been collated from a variety of sources, including published data, industry sources and government statistics. In addition, a number of trade interviews were undertaken. Given our background in a number of the relevant product sectors and associated distribution channels, we have also been able to use our knowledge and information base to build more relevant comment and input into the report.
Domestic Kitchen and Bathroom Worktops Market - UK 2009-2013 (Dec 2009)
This is the first edition of the AMA Research report on the UK Domestic Kitchen and Bathroom Worktops Market. The report covers kitchen and bathroom worktops, upstands and splashbacks, analysing the overall market within the context of the wider economic environment, as well as including reviews on product sectors, suppliers and distribution.
Current trends within the UK domestic kitchen furniture market are reviewed and likely future developments identified, along with an analysis of key issues affecting the kitchen and bathroom worktops industry. The report contains historical data for the 2004-2009 period and provides forecasts to 2013.
While there are basic Government statistics at an overall construction industry level, there are very few officially recognised statistics at individual market, product or sector level. Some sectors of the construction industry or trade associations produce basic market statistics but, in general, there is very little published data which identifies market size, product mix, sector application mix, supply and distribution structures and shares etc.
AMAs reports address this fundamental lack of data in terms of providing an assessment of markets. The kitchen and bathroom worktops market is typical in terms of lack of availability of market data. As a result, information in this report has been collated from a wide range of sources and includes both primary and secondary research data. Secondary data sources include government statistics, company accounts, Internet, trade magazines, etc, whilst a range of interviews with suppliers, distributors, retailers and others has also contributed to the development of this report.

Ceramic and Natural Stone Tiles Market Report - UK 2011-2015 (Jun 2011)
This report reviews the Ceramic and Natural Stone Tiles market in the UK and assesses recent developments within the overall market and individual sub-sectors. Aspects examined include market development, recent trends, sectoral analysis, and key factors influencing future development of the overall market and for each sub-sector.
Both ceramic and nature stone tiles can be viewed as mature markets with a long history of use in the UK but both had experienced rejuvenation in recent years with increased demand for both wall and floor tiles. However, the experience 2008-10 has been for reduction in demand from both the domestic and contract end-use sectors as declining new housebuilding levels in 2009 was followed by reduced output in the non-domestic construction sectors in 2010. The lower value sectors of the market have fared less well than the middle and upper sectors where the improve not move trend has seen homeowners focusing on higher value products particularly polished porcelain and marbles for bathroom and kitchen refurbishments. However, growth in the upper sectors has not been sufficient to prevent overall market decline of 14% 2008-10.
This report reviews the key developments within the Ceramic and Natural Stone Tiles market over the last two years, providing an overall analysis of the current market with indications of potential future trends and opportunities for growth. The information used to provide market analysis and forecasts has been collated from a variety of sources including published data, company websites, company accounts, government statistics and trade interviews.
Building and Home Improvement Market - UK 2011-2015 (Mar 2011)
This report reviews the market for the building and home improvement products distribution market. The various distribution channels are reviewed and key company profiles detailed. Key product sectors, market sizes, trends and factors influencing the market are assessed; although it should be emphasised that with such a wide variety of products, only a summary of each is possible in the scope of this report. AMA Research has a range of reports that assess many of these markets individually. The future prospects for this distribution market are also considered.
The health of the market is directly related to the performance of the UK building and construction sector, influenced by both new-build and RMI (repair, maintenance and improvement) activities. As a consequence, the market has been severely impacted by the recession and the contraction of its core end-use sectors. In 2010 it is estimated that the building and home improvement products distribution market was worth around £39.5bn at distributors selling prices, with prospects in the short term remaining challenging.
This distribution market is highly fragmented with 8 dominant national organisations (4 merchants and 4 DIY multiples) competing with many regional and local organisations.
Floorcoverings Market - UK 2011-2015 (Feb 2011)
This report reviews the Floorcoverings market in the UK and assesses recent developments within the overall market and individual sub-sectors. Aspects examined include market development, recent trends, sectoral analysis, and key factors influencing future development of the overall market and for each sub-sector.
The maturity of the floorcoverings market and the non-essential nature of purchases have meant that value has decreased 2008-10. Domestic demand has been particularly affected by the decline in housebuilding and house moving in 2008-09. Whilst contract applications remained relatively positive in 2008 the experience 2009-10 has been for significant reductions in demand from sectors such as retail and commercial offices. This has resulted in 14% decline in value for floorcoverings 2008-10 with value now estimated at around £1.78bn.
This report reviews the key developments within the Floorcoverings market over the last two years, providing an overall analysis of the current market with indications of potential future trends and opportunities for growth. The information used to provide market analysis and forecasts has been collated from a variety of sources including published data, company websites, company accounts, government statistics and trade interviews.

The information used to provide market analysis and forecasts has been collated from a variety of sources including published data, company websites, company accounts, government statistics and trade interviews.
Garden Products Distribution Market - UK 2010-2014 (Apr 2010)
This report, the tenth edition, reviews the domestic garden products distribution market in the UK. Key product sectors, market sizes, trends and factors influencing the market are assessed. The report provides an insight into the distribution structure and reviews key the distribution channels.
This market is highly dependent on the weather as well as the economic conditions, although the gardening industry tends to cope well with economic downturns and does not suffer as badly as some other sectors. However the overall garden products market declined in both 2008 and 2009, significantly impacted by the decline in the high value conservatories sector. It is estimated that the market was worth £5.17 bn in 2009 and whilst it is anticipated that 2010 will be a tough year for the sector, recovery is expected with growth continuing to 2014 when the market is expected to reach a value of £6.17 bn. The unpredictable UK weather significantly impacts on this market with many sectors being negatively impacted by poorer climatic conditions, whilst others may benefit.
Bathroom Market - UK 2010-2014 (Apr 2010)
Traditionally, the UK market for bathroom products differs considerably from many European markets. The UK generally operates on low pressure water systems, bathrooms are normally 'dry' environments in the UK as opposed to 'wet' (i.e. tiled floors, walls), and bathing is much more popular in the UK than Europe, where showers are more prevalent.
These characteristics have meant that the major UK manufacturers in the traditional product areas have historically dominated the UK market. However, the characteristics of the bath and sanitaryware market have changed, due in part to standardised legislation and concentrating distribution. The level of imports has increased considerably and as a result, the UK market is now exposed to product and design trends from a variety of sources, particularly Europe.
The bathroom has also become less utilitarian and more of a leisure room, offering greater added value opportunities to suppliers. Import growth has prompted a greater emphasis on design and the market is now more competitive with a wider range of suppliers and products.
This report analyses the recent and current trends by product including comment on future prospects and implications for suppliers and the industry as a whole. The report represents a comprehensive review of the bathroom products industry covering the following sectors: Baths & Sanitaryware, Brassware, Bathroom Accessories, Bathroom Furniture, Whirlpool and Spa Systems.
Wood and Laminate Floorcoverings Market Report - UK 2011-2015 (Oct 2011)
This report reviews the Wood and Laminate Floorcoverings market in the UK and assesses recent developments within the overall market and individual sub-sectors. Aspects examined include market development, recent trends, sectoral analysis, and key factors influencing future development of the overall market and for each sub-sector.
Although the wood flooring market is relatively mature, it experienced a major upturn from the 1990s onwards, following firstly the introduction of laminates and latterly the expansion of the engineered woods sector. Following exceptional growth to 2004, the market then reverted to growth levels more in line with the overall floorcoverings market in 2005-08. The experience 2008-10 has been for decline, with current forecasts indicating further decline for 2011 as the housing market remains subdued and with little evidence of short-term recovery of key non-domestic sectors.
This report reviews the key developments within the Wood and Laminate Floorcoverings market over the last two years, providing an overall analysis of the current market with indications of potential future trends and opportunities for growth.
Bathroom Market Report - UK 2011-2015 (Oct 2011)
Traditionally, the UK market for bathroom products differs considerably from many European markets. Electrical Accessories Market Report - UK 2011-2015 Analysis (Jun 2011)
This report reviews the market for electrical accessories covering low voltage (LV) wiring accessories, LV circuit protection & switchgear and LV cable systems. This market experienced significant decline in 2008/2009 in both volume and value terms due to global financial instability and the resulting credit crunch causing significant drops in construction output and house building. Despite demand remaining depressed into 2010, prices rose substantially in the market leading to marginal growth in value terms for 2010.
The market is mature but seldom displays stable growth over time as it is dependent upon on fluctuations in raw material prices, which have been particularly volatile in recent years, and on the performance of the construction and housebuilding markets.
Over the past few years the market has been supported by public sector construction, and by the continued trend towards more sophisticated household appliances and electronic devices, as well as relatively high levels of product development in certain sectors. The market has also been supported by the requirement for more split load consumer units and RCDs in the circuit protection equipment sector in response to changes in legislation. However, the market for electrical accessories remains extremely price competitive with low cost imports a key feature of the market.
The current outlook for the market over the medium term is for a return to growth by the end of 2011, with annual value growth levels of around 3% expected from 2012 onwards underpinned by a recovery in the private housing sector in particular. However, the pace of recovery will be slow and a return to pre-crisis levels in terms of market value is not expected within the forecast period.
This report looks at the key developments within the Electrical Accessories market since 2005, providing an overall analysis of the current market place with indications of potential future trends and opportunities.
